Whatever time of year you visit Thailand, Chiang Mai
is an ideal destination to choose as a base to visit rural Thailand. Chiang
Mai can be a holiday in itself - explore the town & go on some tours.
Or , if you have time you can explore other areas, such as Chiang Rai and
Mae Hong Son.
Places to visit on your trip to Chiang Mai include: Doi Suthep temple, temples in the city (Wat Chiang Man, Wat Suan Dokh, Wat Jed Yod, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang), the Night Bazaar, Ban Tawai handicraft village. Not to be missed are the elephants, either at one of the elephant camps or on a trek. Or try your hand on a mahout training course at the Lampang Elephant Conservation Centre. Proceeds go towards supporting their elephants and running their elephant hospital. Hiking in the hills shouldn't be missed, if you have time the 3 day trek is the best option. Then once you've worked up an appetite go for the Thai Cookery Course and learn how to make some of the famous Thai dishes. |

During the high season (Oct.-March), it is a good idea to call ahead and check the availability of rooms at your chosen guesthouse/hotel and book ahead.
If you come to Chiang Mai by plane you will arrive at Chiang Mai Airport. It only takes 5-10 minutes to reach the centre of the town. There are airport taxis that will take you to your hotel/guesthouse of choice, the price should be approx. 150 Baht.
If you come by train, you will arrive at the railway station on the east of town. It's only a 5 minute journey to the centre of town. There are tuk tuks and songtaews (red trucks) that will take you to your guesthouse/hotel for approx. 60-100Bt depending on destination.
If you come by bus, you will probably arrive at one of the two bus stations. The main
bus station (Arcade Bus Station), if you come from Sukothai, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai or
government bus from Bangkok. The Chang Puak Bus Station (white elephant), if you come from
Thaton. There are tuk tuks and songtaews (red
trucks) that will take you to your guesthouse/hotel for approx. 80 - 100Bt
depending on destination.
If you come by tour bus (from Bangkok), you will probably be brought into the centre of
town.
